Chapter 1. Gaita assembly

Capítulo 1. El montaje de la gaita

The first thing you should take into account in this tutorial is the fact that when you buy a gaita there is a possibility that it will arrive partially or totally disassembled.  Possibly you will find that the instrument is divided into two parts, at the second joint of the bass drone.  In this case, you will have no difficulty in putting the two parts together.

With the above diagram, the gaita can be easily assembled where the different parts are joined by cork or rubber.  It is different in the joints between the stocks and the bag since these are tightly knotted.  This operation goes further than “user-level” and you should leave that to a gaita maker.

It is essential to mention here one of the most delicate operations in the assembly of a gaita.  If you do not follow this precise procedure when removing the chanter from its stock, you run the risk of breaking the chanter or the reed.

When removing the chanter, you must pay particular attention to the following procedure, since a wrong manipulation can have drastic results.

1.        With one hand, grab the stock of the chanter. (That’s where the slide of the chanter goes into the stock near the bag.)

2.        With the other hand,  grab the head of the chanter. (That’s the wider part, next to the slide.)

3.        Carefully and slowly both pull and twist the chanter until it comes out of the stock.

Note:  Never try to remove or twist the chanter by grabbing it by its body (middle) or sole (bottom end).  If you do, there is a good chance that your chanter will break in two.

When removing the chanter from the chanter stock, you should take special care to avoid scraping the chanter reed against the inside of the chanter stock.  It is essential that the chanter comes straight out of the chanter stock.  That way you will not damage your reed.
